Televisions are predominant in American homes. News broadcasts inform us; weather channels alert us to severe conditions; and sporting events bring us to our feet, as emotions run high for our favorite team. But, most of all, television influences us! As Christians, we must carefully evaluate how we are influenced. Have our senses been dulled to what we are actually allowing into our homes and into our minds?
How about taking the “television challenge!” Next time you watch television, grab a pen and some scrap paper. Every time you hear or see anything contrary to Scripture, place a tally mark: using God’s name in vain, cursing; endorsing cohabitation, adultery, or homosexuality; making fun of Christian values; cheating or telling a lie to achieve success. Are these really what we want to set before our own eyes or the eyes of our children? What are the long-term influences? Psalm 101:3 says: “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes.” And, Philippians 4:8 instructs us to think on things that are pure. May we all seek to please God, even in what we set before our eyes.
